04 July A good day offCan i just say that if anyone is wanting to get married at Boringdon Hall in Devon then DON'T! They are incompetent and unco-operative. Ok long story but lets go back to the beginning. My best chum is getting married in 2010, she's waited a long time for it and obviously wants it to be a perfect day and decided to have the wedding at the aforementioned establishment. They booked the venue and had made arrangements for all the different elements that would come together to make it a truely original day; live band, gaming tables, my medieval society and a huge pyramid of profiteroles (Can't remember the french name for it) to name just a few things. The girl who was in charge of the booking had been less than helpful previously but it eventually all seemed to be coming together. We went up today to chat about the medieval display and make some further arrangements but we found her to be unhelpful again, apparently she was tired as she had spent a few days at Wimbledon!!! Suddenly she was concerned that our medieval tents would damage the grass (English Heritage don't have that concern when we work for them and i'm pretty sure their buildings are alot more listed than this hotel!!) and as there was another wedding there on that day, we were told the tents would have to be put elsewhere. Also her answer for all the other queries was "I'll have to find out". Now let me explain that my friends are going to be spending a disgusting amount of money there and i would have thought that the venue would have been far more accomodating. Anyway....a short while later, the hotel phones and said that due to an almighty cock up they have double booked the rooms so my friends would have to make do with the upstairs area. But this area would not be big enough to accomodate all the different elements, we would not be able to do the medieval display as downstairs is now being used by this other couple and my friend's dad cannot walk up lots of stairs. I mean how innept is this venue that it would do this and in the process completely ruin someone's special day!? I hear you say why why don't they just change the date but it was going to be an anniversary for them and does this level of incompetence really make you want to make another booking at this place!? She did have another choice for the wedding so we loaded her daughter into the car and headed off to see them. This venue was The Two Bridges Hotel on Dartmoor, ok its a little way out but as we got there it was obvious that the setting was just perfect and so totally idyllic. We were greeted when we arrived, given complimentary coffee, had a break down of the wedding costs and given a tour. The music room was just amazing and set out in a Georgian style which was breath taking, this lead out into a huge function room which looked out onto the moors and there was a garden out the back with a fountain. These rooms and garden would be exclusive to the wedding and the hostess did everything in her power to accomodate. The band had played there before so that was easy, the hotel had recently had a lord of the rings wedding so they were cool with the tents and fight displays and every other question was answered with a resounding yes. Plus it is cheaper! What a difference between the two venues. I think if Boringdon Hall wants to continue making money then they should get their heads out of their asses and try a bit harder!!!
